Congratulations Brian Alcock, winner of the 2025 Michael Kamin Hart Award (Staff). This award was created to honour the memory of Michael Kamin Hart, who was completing his Masters degree in Biochemistry at the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University when he was taken by cancer. The Michael Kamin Hart Memorial Scholarships are awarded to an undergraduate student, Masters student, PhD student, and Staff member who has demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and the same enthusiasm for science that was evident in Michael. Brian has worked alongside Dr. Andrew McArthur since 2015, when he first joined after completing his MSc in McMaster’s Department of Biology. He is currently the Lead Biocurator for the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database, where his research contributions focus on harnessing biomedical ontology and database infrastructure to improve antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data integrity, accessibility and analysis. He is involved in both national and international collaborations focusing on antimicrobial stewardship, genomic AMR surveillance, and global data standards, and his publications have been cited over 6000 times. He currently lives in Hamilton with his family and their dog.
